Energy Star Homes

The ENERGY STAR Program is a joint effort, by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE), to have an important impact on helping the environment.

An ENERGY STAR home is a home built to use at least 30% LESS energy for heating, cooling and water heating than required by the current national Model Energy Code.

Although an ENERGY STAR home appears to cost more initially, it can actually save you more than $50,000 over the life of a 30-year mortgage through monthly utility bill savings.

Also, purchasing or building an ENERGY STAR home can qualify you for an ENERGY STAR mortgage, which can mean qualifying for a larger loan, reduction in loan origination fees, discounted interest rates and even cash back at closing.

Any home can be rated to see if it meets the Energy Star guidelines. Not only is the thermal envelope of the home taken into consideration, the rater will also look at the efficiency of your refrigerator, water heater, washer, dryer and other major appliances, lighting and much more. A home that does meet the 30% more efficient standard receives a 4-Star rating. Homes that exceed that 30% requirement will receive a 5-Star rating, including a brass plaque that shows that this home is the best it can possibly be on energy-efficiency.
